The increased capital investment associated with automation and consequent pressures to make greater use of equipment is resulting in the employment of greater numbers of persons on what is called "shift work." Evidence concerning the effects of shift work on worker satisfaction is incomplete, but there are indications that these effects depend on the nature of the work schedule as well as on the personality of the individual worker. Mann and Hoffman (1960) studied the attitudes of rotating shift workers in two power plants and found a general dislike for shift work. "There were, however, important differences in the extent of this dislike between the two plants. Thirty-five percent of the workers in one of the plants and 73 percent of the workers in the other plant reported disliking shift work very much or somewhat. The differences in results between the two plants might be attributable to differences in work schedules. Even though both work schedules were rotating (that is, workers changed periodically from the day to the night to the evening shift), there were many differences. At the plant in which workers manifested the greatest dissatisfaction with shift work, the rotation was monthly, whereas at the other plant it was weekly; in the former plant, the men and supervisors rotated together, whereas at the latter, they rotated individually; at the former, shift workers had weekends off once every fourth week, whereas at the latter, workers had them off only every twenty-five weeks; and the shifts at the former plant started at 12 P.M., 8:00 A.M., and 4:00 P.M., whereas at the latter, the starting times were 11:00 P.M., 7:00 A.M., and 3:00 P.M.
